Training for Speed

I need to focus on training to improve my speeds.

1. Interval Training

2. Ride Off-Road

3. More Climb

I need to do more rides with a lot of climb. There are plenty of climb opportunities in Arnold. There are some decent climbs on Broadway/Kingston/Telegraph.

This might include hill repetitions.

Minimum Average Power

I am going to create a "P-Train" activity profile that nags me if my average power output drops below a set level. I will see how long I can maintain that. Then, I will work toward extending that output level for longer and longer distances.

So first I will work on 130 watts. I think I want to practice at Arnold City Park, but it may be too crowded. I can definitely do this training on Levee road. I will maintain my power output for as long as I can, gradually building up to 20 miles.

  1. 20 miles at 130 watts
  2. 20 miles at 150 watts
  3. 20 miles at 170 watts

Interesting. My bike computer thinks my FTP (Functional Threshold Power) is 164 Watts, which is defined as the highest power output I can systain for one hour. Maybe I should put that to the test. I don't know where it gets this number, because my all time high record is 138 watts for one hour. In the last 3 months, I have sustained 130 watts for somewhere between 10 and 20 minutes.
