Night Riding
I have gear specifically for riding at night.
Lights
- Pedals: Redshift Arclight "Smart LED" Pedals
- Heavily marketed, flat city pedals with LED lights that always
know their orientation to shine white in front and red in the
rear. 3+ hour runtime on solid. The bearings on these are
awful. I originally intended to buy another set for SPD cleats, but
the bearings are so awful, I couldn't possibly stand to ride with
them very often. Instead, I'll use these city pedals for the annual
Moonlight Ramble, and use normal clipless pedals for other night
rides.
- Nite Ize SpokeLit Wheel Lights
- These attach to spokes, which means they move in a circular
motion when I'm riding, which effectively call attention to the fact
that I'm riding a bicycle. The package claims 5 hours, and the web
site claims 6 hours of battery life, but I assume that's for the
blinking mode.
- Helmet Light: Giro Roc Loc 5
- A red flashing light designed to clip onto the rear of the Giro
Aries helmet. Solid: 20 lm 2 hrs; Flashing: 30 lm 10 hrs.
Of course, I will also ride with my usual headlight (Trek Commuter Pro RT)
and tail light (Garmin Varia RTL515). See:
Lights.
